Project Details & Results

The project is designed to contribute to informed participation and decision-making of communities, CSOs, active groups, decision-makers for implementation and monitoring of measures directed towards protection of human health and the environment locally and globally through elimination of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) and obsolete pesticide stockpiles, and addressing associated contaminated sites within a sound chemicals management framework. Thus, the present project is designed to contribute to the ongoing GEF-UNDP Full Size Project (FSP) “Elimination of Obsolete Pesticide Stockpiles and Addressing POPs and Contaminated Sites within a Sound Chemicals Management Framework in Armenia”.

In line with the SGP strategies, the project will focus its activities on i) safe pesticide management; ii) reduction of chemicals use and contamination (particularly with POPs compounds); and iii) capacity development, awareness raising and knowledge sharing. The project will contribute to practical solutions of safe management of harmful chemicals through joint efforts with national and international actors; and the development of local capacities for environmentally sound management of harmful chemicals and waste at the community level. Given the common nature of chemicals and waste management issues for the countries in the region of Central and Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA), the project will foster knowledge exchange and collaboration among local and international partnerships and initiatives (IPEN, WECF, PAN-Europe and PAN-UK) and promote involvement of national stakeholders.

Project Results

The project will produce the following major results:

  • Local Stakeholder Analysis Report is developed;
  • At least 80% of target population is aware of the risks from hazardous chemicals to the human health and the environment (to be measured through pre- and post-questionnaires);
  • Watchdog capacity of CSOs and decision-makers is strengthened;
  • Partnerships and networking from local to global level are enhanced;
  • Simulation model reflecting: i) the method of mobilization around identified needed activities, ii) estimated resources, and iii) required mechanisms for safe and effective handling community based OP waste.
